Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen “Portrait of the Steamship Britannic”, oil on canvas, depicting the ship in rough seas with multiple figures on deck, smoke smoke stacks blowing forward indicating a strong wind, flying an American flag atop its forward mast at its stern the red ensign of British civilian vessels, signed dated and located lower right A. Jacobsen, 1882; 705 Palisades, West Hoboken, NJ. The Britannic was a member of the White Star Line and made transcontinental crossings during the period 1874-1903. For a period of several years she held the speed record for transcontinental crossings and was involved in several collisions with other ships moving too fast in the fog.
