Philip Hicken (Nantucket, 1910 - 1985)

Painter, educator, printer, Philip Hicken was a member of the Boston Printmakers,
Cambridge Art Association and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Art. He was a member of the Artists Association of Nantucket. With colleagues, Philip Hicken collaborated to invent the modern silkscreen technique.

Hicken’s work can be found in the Brooklyn Museum; Berkshire Museum and at Princeton. The artist was commissioned for a WPA mural, in Fort Warren, Mass, 1941. He was awarded a combat art assignment (US Department of Military History, 1970). Hicken was a painting instructor at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, 1950-1953; at Boston University, 1956-1957; and starting in 1957 was Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at the Art Institute of Boston.

Philip Hicken taught painting to a number of students on island, many of whom became accomplished island painters, including Francis Arkin, Brock Davis, Barbara Frazier, Robert Frazier, etc., as well as artists from an earlier era, like Isabelle Tuttle, Millicent Clapp, and Dorothy Goerger. ~Artists Association of Nantucket
