Pair of Polychrome Scrimshaw Antique Sperm Whale Teeth, circa 1846, depicting a polychrome 28-star American flag flying above portrait of George Washington, presumably commemorating the annexation of Texas to the United States occurring during the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848. The reverse engraved with an American bark. The companion tooth engraved with a courting couple, the reverse engraved with an Allied French bark. On December 29, 1845 Texas officially became the twenty-eighth state in the Union although the formal transfer of government did not take place until February 19, 1846. The 28th star became official July 4, 1846.
