“In the spring of 1882, artist Henry Platt of Norfolk Virginia, who was known on the island for his crayon and charcoal portraits, set up a school of art in the east room of the Atheneum. Island artist Arthur E. Jenks wrote an article for the local paper about his visit to the school, where he “noticed praiseworthy studies upon easels, the fine art work of two of our Nantucket ladies; their execution and handling give promise of some superior oil sketches in the future.” He also commented on the importance of having such a school on the island: “To our young women a school of art is invaluable, and maybe one of immediate utility …in the one branch of designing there is a wide field for labor at good wages.” ~~ An excerpt from Picturing Nantucket – An Art History of the Island with Paintings from the Collection of the Nantucket Historical Association — Edited by Michael A. Jehle
