Birge Harrison (American 1854-1929) Oil on Canvas “Almond Tree Blossoms”, signed lower left
19 in. x 29.5 in. Born in Philadelphia, Harrison was one of the leading tonalist painters. He often painted from memory and preferred a muted palette as represented in this Harrison offering. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and was advised by John Singer Sargent to visit Paris. He did so in 1875 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In the 1880s he did illustrations for Scribners magazine from around the world. Afterward, he returned to New York and taught at the Art Students League, he also founded the Woodstock Art Colony. Harrisons exhibits include: Expo Universale, Paris, 1889 (medal); Columbian Exposition (Chicago), 1893; Buffalo Exposition, 1901; Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St Louis), 1904; Panama Pacific International Exposition, 1915.
