Born in Continental, AZ, Van Ryder was a studio painter of ranch life scenes in Arizona. He spent his youth in Montana as a cowboy, but his interest in art eventually led to his becoming a pupil of Charles Russell. In later years, he settled in Tucson where he was a rancher and painter of western subjects. His illustrations for Literary Digest also earned him membership in the Society of Illustrators.
