Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson (Massachusetts, 1871-1932) “Volunteer”, patina bronze depicting a soldier bearing arm, stamped “The Henry-Bonnard Bronze Co., Founders N.Y. 1902″, copyright 1901. Born in Brookline, MA Kitson (Nee Ruggles) studied both in Boston under Henry Hudson Kitson and in Paris under the painter Pascal and sculptor Dagnan-Bouveret. She was awarded an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1888 and in 1895 and was the first woman to be admitted to the National Sculpture Society. Among her works are a statue “Tadeusz Kosciusco” in Boston Public Gardens and “The Hiker” in honor of Spanish-American War Veterans near the gates to the Arlington National Cemetery.
