DeWitt Jones Lobrano “On the River with the Sidewheelers Aurora and Europa”, acrylic on canvas, signed lower left.
29 in. x 45 ½ in.
DeWitt Jones Lobrano grew up in rural Louisiana. During infancy he lived in Franklin Parish near the town of Winnsburo. Most of his childhood recollections center on drawing with crayons and painting with watercolors. At the age of twelve, the crayons and watercolors were supplanted by Sears and Roebuck mail order oil paints. DeWitt earned the money for the oils by picking cotton on a neighbor’s plantation. Today, the plantation and the cotton are brought to life in his work. The techniques and the effects are similar to oil paintings done in the mid-nineteenth century by American native artists.
Childhood memories from Louisiana, naturally, influence his choice of subjects; however, the strongest consistent influence is DeWitt’s desire to recreate nineteenth century America as we all want to believe that it was.
DeWitt’s first exhibition was in New Orleans. The most recent showings have been in New York and Washington, D.C.
