John O.R. Sharp was a student and friend of Grant Wood, having met in 1930 when a then young Sharp gave Wood a tour of Eldon, IA, guiding Wood to the Eldon farm which became the inspiration and subject for Wood’s iconic 1930 painting, American Gothic.
The young artist maintained a friendship with Wood, while continuing his studies at the Davenport Municipal Art Gallery (1931) the Stone City Art Colony, where Wood was among the faculty (1932), the Art Students League, NYC, the National Academy of Design, NYC, and Greenwich House, NYC
As portraits of American culture, John Sharp’s oil paintings reflect both American Regionalist and Precisionist influences, together with forays into the abstract. He was commissioned under the Works Progress Administration to paint US Post Office murals in Iowa. His painting of Indian Corn was featured on the cover of Collier’s magazine. His work enjoyed major exhibitions throughout the Midwest and in New York, as well as in Bucks County, where he lived for nearly twenty years with his longtime companion and artistic collaborator, Paul Crosthwaite. The couple eventually took up residences in Palm Beach and on Orange Street, Nantucket, where both men continued to paint and teach. ~ sources: James A.
