Moses Stiles (1771-1854) Hanover Township N.J. Inlaid Mahogany Tall Case Clock, 1st quarter of the 19th century, mahogany case with cherry, ebony and tulipwood quarter fan and quarter column inlays, signed calendar moon and sun dial, gooseneck bonnet with finials.
Note : “Moses Stiles, the son of Ebenezer Stiles and his wife, Polly, was born in Morristown, New Jersey, on April 2, 1771. He made his living as a farmer and clockmaker, and lived in Hanover Township, New Jersey. He was married to Hannah Weaver until they separated in 1825; they parted ways because Hannah’s husband, Henry Weaver, was found to be still alive at the time Stiles had married her. Moses Stiles and Hannah Weaver had five children together: Maria, John, William, Sally, and Ebenezer. On November 22, 1825, Stiles married Sarah Allen in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. They had two children, Sarah Jane (b. 1830), and Mary (d. 1845). Moses Stiles died in Morris Plains, New Jersey, on August 22, 1854.” The New Jersey Historical Society “Guide to the Papers of the Stiles Family”
