Mainly self-taught, Cross began his career in the UK during World War II as an illustrator of training manuals. He gained renown in the 1960s while working for the company Airfix which sold model aircraft featuring Cross’s artwork. He is a member of both the Society of Aviation artists and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. His works are characterized by their crispness, clarity and attention to detail, often focusing on historical 19th century themes. His paintings are represented in many private and public collections including the Peabody Essex Museum, the U.S.S. Constitution Museum and the Ventura County Marine Museum.
