British Sailor’s Woolwork of Two Warships Nearing Land, circa 1870, the artist uses trapunto technique, padding the sails with cotton or other material to make them appear to billow in the wind. The flags, waterline, and land are executed in silk; the guns are detailed with beads in period bird’s eye maple frame with gold painted inner frame. The orange waterline is often associated with the Channel Islands. 16 ¾ in. x 22 ¾ in. Overall 23 ½ in. x 29 ½ in.
