Scarce 19th Century Nantucket Made Pewter Wash Basin, Cast by Benjamin Field Jr. signed upon the base “BENJN FIELD NANTUCKET 1863”. Nantucket’s only brass and pewter foundry was located at the corner of Washington Street and Commercial Wharf. The foundry was opened in 1821 by Benjamin Field Sr. in 1841 he died and operations were taken over by his son Benjamin Field Jr., who continued running the business into the Civil War era. The foundry and land were offered for sale in 1875 after the death of Field Jr.
