The distinguished Scottish artist, William Marshall Brown was born in Edinburgh. While working as a wood engraver and book illustrator, he studied art at the Edinburgh College of Art and at the Royal Scottish Academy Life School.
Brown spent time in London and painted in both the Netherlands and France but became recognized for his figurative work in Scottish landscape settings. Although he painted across Scotland he settled in Cockburnspath, a small village near the North Sea coast where he executed some of his best work.
The artist was elected ARSA in 1909 and RSA in 1928. Marshall Brown’s work is held in many museums, including the City of Edinburgh Collection, Berwick Museum & Art Gallery, Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum in Warwickshire, Dundee Art Galleries and Museums Collections, Hunterian Art Gallery at the University of Glasgow, the Paisley Museum and Art Galleries,
the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture.
