Mays was known for New England scene paintings, landscapes and historical scenes that evoke nostalgia in their storylike presentations. He went to the Rhode Island School of Design and started seriously painting when he was stationed in Recife, Brazil during World War II. His work has been shown at the Colorado Springs Museum, Denver Art Museum and the Ferargil Gallery. He has also been prominently featured in Yankee magazine.
