Important Whaling Bark Massasoit Stern Carving, 19th Century, depicting a mature tree in a river landscape within a ribbon bundled leaf gilt frame with inscription on reverse: “Off Stern of Bark Massasoit”. Afterward renamed “Ocean Stead” between 1860 and 1865 and repainted August 1906 “James J. Jones.” The whaling Bark Massasoit was built in 1825 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, making 5 whaling voyages between 1841 and 1862. Sold in 1862 and renamed “Ocean Steed”, making 2 additional whaling voyages between 1868 and 1873.
