Exceptional China Trade Fan, circa 1860, very fine gouache on paper with carved mother of pearl sticks. A topographical fan showing the three best-known ports of China: Macao, Canton and Hong Kong (left to right), all surrounded by brightly colored Chinese symbols and decorations with a mauve border. Supported on superbly carved mother of pearl sticks. The reverse with a Mandarin scene depicting 48 figures in gardens and various settings all with applied ivory painted faces and silk robes (sometimes referred to as thousand faces). Gilt fan frame exposing both sides.
