Ferdinand Knab (German 1834-1902) Oil on Canvas “Tranquil Evening Riverside Landscape” with antique villa in the distance, signed lower right F. Knab and dated lower left 1900/12 in original carved and gilt frame and stretcher. Ferdinand Knab was born in Würzburg and was initially trained in architecture. In 1859 he moved to Munich, where he attended the painting classes of Arthur von Ramberg (1819-1875) and Carl Theodor von Piloty (1826-1886). Later in 1868 he traveled to Italy, where he discovered his passion for romantic Ruin landscapes. Knab was a very sought after artist during his life time and was occasionally commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria for the Munich Residenz and the Linderhof Palace.
