Set of 13 Chinese Export Rockefeller Pattern Dishes, circa 1805, comprising 2 small platters bearing Arms of Seton of Abercorn.
Length 10 ¾ in. 11 Dinner Plates Diameter 9 ¾ in.
Each piece enameled in Mandarin palette with a different vignette of figures at various pursuits; the dinner plates with sepia diaper pattern inner border interrupted by bird and flower reserves alternate with small iron-red quatrefoil landscapes and within outer borders of richly gilt scroll work incorporating further iron-red landscapes alternate with sepia riverscapes. The two small platters lack the inner border and feature Arms of Seton of Abercorn, vignettes of birds in wooded settings and sepia riverscapes reserved from the gilt scroll work ground. Condition: Varying states of wear to enamels and gilding; one plate cracked and glued; 3 with hairline cracks.
Note: What we now call Rockefeller porcelain probably comprised just 3 or 4 very large dinner services made at slightly varying dates early in the 19th Century. Two services are known to have descended in wealthy Scottish trading families, and it is likely the others were also made for well-to-do Scots.
