The Spinner Family Gilt Bronze and Belgian Black Marble Clock Garniture, 3rd quarter of the 19th Century, presented to Francis Elias Spinner (1802-1890) by the United States Government in recognition of services rendered as Treasurer of the United States from 1861 to 1875 and descended in the family to the present owner. Comprising clock and pair of ewers, the clock with drum-form movement with Japy Freres & Cie Medaille D’or exposition medallion to back-plate and glazed bezel door in a plinth, base surmounted by a classical warrior sculpted by Huzel. Engraved with dedicatory inscription: “From his friends in U.S. Treasurer’s Office, June 30, 1875.” The base of the figure inscribed with facsimile signature of F.E. Spinner and that of Huzel; flanked by a pair of ewers en suite. All three with bands of Vitruvian scroll set against rouge marble and formerly with ormolu feet.

NOTE: Spinner was appointed by President Lincoln and served from 16 March 1861 until his resignation on 1 July 1875. He was the first to suggest the employment of women in government offices.
