The name “breakfront” is a modern term and derives from the profile of the case, where the central section extends past the side sections. Made from costly mahogany, these imposing cases were affordable only to the wealthiest of consumers. Monumental desk and bookcases, such as this fine example, were impressive pieces well suited to the private libraries of the wealthy and social elite.
