Martele .950 Fine Silver Water Pitcher, Gorham Mfg. Co. Providence, RI, circa 1904, of undulate baluster form, repousse and chased with carved leaves and flowers of sow thistle (sonchus oleraceus). Marked under base with code letters G/WD/P. According to Gorham archives, the present pitcher corresponds to one produced 11 October 1904 by Lars Darlin Monsen (maker) and George W. Sauthof (chaser). The underside additionally engraved with period monogram and date 1906. Note: In addition to cuisine, sonchus oleraceus has a variety of uses in herbalism and has been ascribed medicinal qualities.
