Two Important Boston Needlework Samplers by the Loring Sisters Hannah B. Loring and Caroline Matilda Loring, circa 1811 and 1816, the first sampler wrought by Hannah B. Loring, Aged 10 Years, 1811 with the alphabet and “Mary Parks”; the second sampler wrought by Caroline Matilda Loring Aged 9 Years, 1816, both in flat wood frames. Hannah B. Loring was born Boston October 22, 1800 and Caroline Matilda Loring was born Boston May 15, 1806.
Note: An extraordinary 1812 embroidered Family Record sampler wrought by Hannah B. Loring is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum (not on view). The Met states “Hannah Loring’s elaborate family record reveals that her father Matthew (1751-1820) was married three times. Hannah was the only child born to Sarah Blake Loring (1763-1800). Mathew’s second wife Sarah, died eight days after Hannah’s birth.” Hannah’s sister Caroline Matilda is included in the family tree embroidered sampler.
