Wick Ahrens spent about fifty years of his life carving whales. He was inspired by and studied under Clark Voorhees, continuing his education at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston and the San Francisco School of Art. Ahrens’ eighteen-foot, 1,000-pound Gray whale is thought to be the largest wooden whale sculpture in the world.
The artist’s work can be found across the country in Aiken, South Carolina, Newport, Rhode Island, Los Angeles and Berkeley, California as well as in the collections of the Coyote Point Museum for Environmental Education in San Mateo, CA, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and the Nantucket Historical Association.
