Mays was known for the New England scene paintings, landscapes and historical scenes that evoke nostalgia.  He went to the Rhode Island School of Design and started his career when he was stationed in Recife, Brazil during World War II.  His work has been shown in the Colorado Springs Museum, Denver Art Museum and Yankee Magazine
