Arthur Norman Davis (Massachusetts 1904-1999) Oil on Board “Fishing Boats Docked”, signed lower left A.N. Davis, in molded silver gilt frame
10 in. x 11.5 in. Framed 12.5 in. x 14 in.
Davis’ oil paintings are mainly of the Gloucester waterfront painted in the 20’s, 30’s and early 40’s. His works also include other local landscapes and winter scenes.
Raised in Gloucester, MA, Arthur Davis grew up in the age of sailing when fishing and cargo vessels were still sailing in and out of Gloucester’s busy harbor. At an early age, he spent time down on the docks where he built model sail boats and completed his first paintings before having any formal training.
After graduating from Gloucester High School in 1922, he continued his education with graphic art classes in Boston. Later, he studied painting privately under Emile Gruppe and Gordon Grant where he was one of his prize pupils. [The estate of Mr. Davis currently cherishes a letter and two personally signed works that were gifts from Mr. Grant ]. Norm Davis also painted on the waterfront with Frederick Mulhaupt and had as a gift one of his paintings. Other contemporaries that he often quoted and painted with were Aldro Hibbard, Frederick Stoddard and of course Gruppe.
