Thaddeus Coffin (1789-1876) Shipmaster of the Nantucket Whaler “Fabius”, Whale Tooth and Wood Snuff Bottle, 2nd Quarter of 19th Century, the tooth nicely carved with eagle and shield, laurel leaf, cannon, anchor and scrolls, carved end caps and Thaddeus Coffin’s name and ship name Fabius. The whale ship Fabius departed Nantucket August 1829 for the Pacific Ocean and returned March 1833 with 2,162 barrels of sperm whale oil.
