Japanese Polychrome Enameled Sterling Silver Presentation Cup, circa 1898, decorated in relief with flowering irises, wisteria vines centering a shield inscribed: HMS Bonaventure Iloilo Dec. 1898; the stem encircled by a coiling dragon, the foot with concentric bands of stylized vines. Mark to underside of a ‘turtle in triangle’, that of a Meija era silversmith who collaborated with retail firm of Arthur & Bond, Yokohama. Note: The Royal Navy Astraea-Class Cruiser HMS Bonaventure (1892) played a pivotal role during the transition to American Occupation in Iloilo, Philippines following the defeat of Spain in the Spanish-American War.
