American Cherry Wood Tall Case Clock, circa 1800-1820. Possibly made on Nantucket Island, circa 1800-1820. The history of this clock place it in the ownership of Sylvanus Ewer of Nantucket at his home at 19 Union Street, Nantucket Massachusetts. He is listed in Starbuck’s History of American Whale fishery as the owner of the Nantucket Whale ship John Adams. The clock was inherited by his only son Peter Folger Ewer and passed down through the family until about 1935 when it was left to the faithful housekeeper. Original finish, original fret work and finials, original feet, and original painted face with whaling scene.The clock was shortened approximately two inches at the bottom of the waist, circa 1825.
