He was never formally trained as an artist but became a major influence on the image of urban males in twentieth-century America through his illustrations for Brooks Brothers catalogs, which included over one thousand drawings. Brown’s art is characterized by a calculated simplicity and authority, with hard-edged lines playing a primary role in his compositions. He also experimented with other media, including oil paints, and began a writing career in the 1930s, writing and illustrating 32 books, with 19 intended for children.
