American Scrimshaw Sperm Whale Tooth with Engraved Nantucket Ship, 19th Century, possibly depicting the Nantucket ship Indus which sailed out of Nantucket as a ship from 1819 until being broken up in 1824; the tooth is profusely engraved with the whaleship sailing toward a lighthouse; in the sky is an American flag and long streaming banner with inscription INDS(sic) NANTUCKET; The verso with two war of 1812 naval scenes; one with an American naval vessel in a harbor and caption “The Hornet Blockading the Bonne Citoyenne.” Below that is a smaller scene depicting two vessels in battle with a caption below “THE PEACOCK EPERVIER.” Along the bottom edge is a row of houses and trees.
