Joseph McGurl (Massachusetts, b. 1958)

Joseph McGurl grew up working with his father James, who was a muralist and became his son’s most influential teacher. Another early influence was Ralph Rosenthal, a teacher at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. McGurl further studied at the Massachusetts College of Arts as well as in both England and Italy.

The artist is a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America and an elected member of the Guild of Boston Artists. He is a Copley Master with the Copley Society of Boston, where he was awarded the John Singleton Copley Award for Artistic Achievement. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists.

His paintings have been included in museum exhibitions; among them retrospective solo exhibitions at the Cape Museum of Fine Arts, The Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the St. Botolph Club of Boston.
